Fulfilling my purpose helps our vision to become a reality and over time will help us to influence thousands of businesses in our territory.  Coaching improves businesses, creates more jobs and ultimately grows our economy.  All three are critical to our future success on the local level.  The work that ActionCOACH does helps accomplish all three.  Our coaches work one on one with businesses, which I call 'grass roots economic development.'  As the market demand for coaching increases we need to make all three of these things happen faster, and thus, we need to add more coaches to our team.

Why I do what I do...  

I went into coaching because as a kid, I saw how difficult it was for my dad as a business owner.  He struggled in his business, many times working long hard hours to make ends meet for our family with eight kids.  He struggled with finances and people, two areas that were not easy to deal with by himself.  At one point it got so tough that my parents were on the verge of bankruptcy and divorce.  Some how, by the grace of God, they made it through.  Looking back, I will never forget the conversation I had with my dad when I was telling him about business coaching.  He wished he would have had a coach, mentor or an outside adviser.  He easily saw how coaching could have helped him and his business.

Seeing my dad struggle with his business is WHY I'm a coach today.  I help others so they don't have to go through the same thing my dad did.

Did you know that nearly 80% of businesses fail within their first five years?  To me that is simply NOT acceptable!  The business world seems to accept this with an attitude that you can't do much about it.  Like failure is simply the price you may have to pay when you go into business for yourself.  Well, I disagree and our Heartland Firm is on a mission to change this. 

At ActionCOACH we make a difference in the lives of business owners, their employees, their families and their communities.  We know there is a better way and we have the systems, experience, the people and the drive to help more business owners to not only survive, but to thrive!  Just imagine the impact YOU could have as a coach by helping someone to NOT go out of business - how would that make you feel?

My story...  

The summer after high school I started my first business. For four summers I painted hundreds of houses, barns, buildings and a few other interesting projects. By the time I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, my crew included three college buddies.  I enjoyed my freedom, flexibility and financial reward. It was then that I fell in love with the idea of being a life-long business owner.  

Upon graduation however, I gave up painting because I believed my education was to prepare me for a JOB! Between my first business experience and growing up with an entrepreneurial dad, being a business owner was my on-going dream. And during my 25 years prior to joining ActionCOACH I looked at every job as if it was my own business.  That attitude served me well in my experiences of ad agency sales, media consulting, newspaper marketing, radio promotion, television producing and non-profit leadership.

In 2000 I started looking at businesses in earnest.  After careful consideration, in 2002, I purchased the ActionCOACH master franchise territory for Iowa and Nebraska.  Today my team provides marketing and coaching support for the coaches in our territory.  I coach, mentor, teach, train and speak to thousands of business owners and leaders on local, regional and national levels. It's a passion of mine and I love it!  And each business coach on the Heartland Firm does many similar things as well.

Before you answer why you think coaching may be right for you, consider these questions and then when we talk with you we will ask about your answers...

-How important is it for you do be doing something where you can truly make a difference?

-Can you describe what type of legacy you would like to leave?

-Why is it imporatant that you find something you can be passionate about?

-What does your lifelong dream look like?

-How much are you willing to grow and develop?

Right up front I look for three things in people...

First...  You have to have passion.  You must be passionate about wanting to help others and have a heart for people; every potential coach looking to join our team must have these two characteristics.  I believe both are essential in order to be a great coach.

Second...  I look for sales experience or a willingness to learn a sales process.  Selling is critical in every successful business.  In order to bring on clients you must get people to attend seminars, which in turn helps them to learn more about what we do.  You have to build relationships with people.  Most importantly, in order to get people to ‘buy’ from you they must first know, like and trust you.  If you don't have sales experience, then you have to be open to learning a proven system.  At ActionCOACH we have a great sales system that we will teach you.

Third...  I look for business owner, executive or management experience.  We can you teach about business, but it helps greatly when you have been in one of these three positions.  Your business experience helps you to be a better coach AND you must be open to learning our proven processes and systems for business success.

We help business owners, executives and leaders 'achieve their dreams.'  We coach and mentor them to greater success and profitability.  We help them with the nuts and bolts, kind of like re-educating them on the basics of blocking and tackling, as required in every business, executive or leadership position.  We are part of a fast growing profession that is very rewarding, fun and exciting. 

We have several positions available in the Heartland Firm in multiple markets.  We have positions open for Franchise Owners in Davenport, Sioux City and Lincoln.  We are looking to add Business Coaches in Waterloo, Dubuque, Davenport and Omaha.  We have Associate positions (a 'coach in training' assisting a veteran coach with client recruiting and more) in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Omaha and Mason City.  And we have Leadership Trainer positions open in all markets.
